Earthquake rocks island in Alaska's Aleutian chain

ANCHORAGE, Alaska: A powerful earthquake rocked one of the few inhabited islands in Alaska's Aleutian chain on Wednesday, but no damage has been found, federal and local officials said.
The magnitude 6.9 quake, centred 80 miles (129 km) southwest of Adak, struck at 3:40 p.m. local time, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said. No tsunami warning was issued, but scientists will monitor the area for any possible earthquake-related waves, center Director Paul Whitmore said.
In Adak, a community of about 330, "We definitely felt it," City Manager Layton Lockett said.
The building that houses city offices and the local school, engineered to withstand frequent earthquakes that strike the region, performed as designed, Lockett said.
"You could just hear the building move, and things were shaking," he said.
No damage was found, though officials were concerned about the fate of underground pipes, he said. The school, which has about 20 students, was out of session at the time.
Adak, an island city about 1,300 miles (2,090 km) southwest of Anchorage, is a converted U.S. Navy station that once housed 6,000 people. It now operates as a port and seafood-processing center serving the North Pacific commercial fishing fleet.
Other moderate earthquakes have struck western Alaska in recent days, according to the center.
A magnitude 4.9 quake was recorded 90 miles (145 km) west of the Alaska Peninsula town of Cold Bay on Tuesday. A magnitude 5.2 quake about 90 miles southwest of Kodiak was recorded on September 18.

Opinion:

To be honest, this was the first time I've heard there was an earthquake in Alaska.Though it may seem normal, as others would think it is a natural disaster. Yes, it is a natural disaster, but it has been happening around the world too, places such as Malaysia is supposed to be "earthquake free", but there are several other cases that Malaysia was struck by an earthquake's after shock or the earthquake itself.

Three hundred killed in single day in Syria, group says

BEIRUT (Reuters) - More than 300 people were killed in Syria on Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, in one of the bloodiest days in the 18-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
World leaders meeting at the United Nations have expressed concern at the continuing violence in Syria but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict, which the Observatory says has claimed 30,000 lives since March 2011.

The British-based organisation, which monitors violence in Syria through a network of activists, said in a report released on Thursday that 55 people were killed in rural areas around Damascus. They included at least 40 who appeared to have been shot in cold blood in the town of al-Dhiyabia, southeast of the capital.
Other activists have put the death toll in al-Dhiyabia as high as 107, blaming Assad's security forces for what they said was a massacre. Video published by activists showed rows of bloodied corpses wrapped in blankets. The victims shown on camera appeared to be male, from 20-year-olds to elderly men.
The Observatory also said 14 people were killed in a rebel bomb attack on a military command centre in Damascus and in an ensuing prolonged gunbattle between rebels and security forces.
Violence in Syria has deepened as the fight against Assad has became more militarised and the president has responded with increasing use of force - including regular air strikes and bombardments against rebel areas.
In the first nine months of the conflict, the United Nations human rights chief said around 5,000 people had been killed. U.N. officials have given up trying to monitor the violence but the Observatory's figures suggest five times as many people have been killed in the second nine-month period.
The Centre for Documentation of Violations in Syria, which is linked to the grassroots anti-Assad Local Coordination Committees, puts the overall death toll at 27,318.

opinion: 

I have always wondered, why are there so many killings in Syria, Iraq, Iran and other Arabian countries. Is killing a thing they do there for a living? If they were, that would be ironic. The point here is, there should be a stop to this, if other countries such as Malaysia is an Islamic country that has almost the same ways of Syria or other Islamic countries as well, we can negotiate democratically, why cant they? That has always been a question in my head.

Govt endorses guide on how to spot gays

Activists voice out shock and disgust.

PETALING JAYA: A government-endorsed parenting guide that describes symptoms of homosexuality has kicked up a storm on the Internet, with human rights and sexuality activists expressing shock and disgust.
Sin Chew Daily today reported that the Education Ministry had endorsed the guide as helpful to parents and teachers.
It was launched during a seminar in Penang yesterday. The event, billed as “Parenting in addressing the issue of LGBTs (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders)”, was officiated by Deputy Education Minister Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
The guide listed four symptoms each for gays and lesbians:
For gays:

• Muscular body and a fondness for showing off the body by wearing clothing, such as by wearing V-necks and sleeveless tops

• A preference for tight and bright coloured clothes

• An inclination to be attracted to men

• A tendency to carry big handbags, similar to the kinds used by women

For lesbians:

• Showing attraction to women

• Distancing themselves from women other than their girlfriends

• A preference for hanging out, sleeping and dining with women

• Absence of feelings for men

Teaching hate
When asked to comment, activist and Seksualiti Merdeka co-founder Pang Khee Teik initially said: “I don’t even know how to respond.”
However, he proceeded to flay the Education Ministry for being “only interested in teaching hate, promoting inequality and playing politics”.
“The Ministry of Education is now officially a bully,” he said. “I never presumed to be in the position to teach the meaning of education to the people running the Ministry of Education. But it has come to that.”
He said education should be used to provide equal opportunity and the realisation of the human potential to collaborate with one another in building a better world.
Pang, who is openly gay, said that studies around the world had proven that discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity would harm individuals as well as society.
“Many of these studies originate in countries which have made such mistakes in their past and who are desperately now trying to undo the wounds that discriminatory policies had left on the psyche of their people,” he said.
He said the ministry should instead pay heed to such LGBT issues as suicide, forced marriages, depression and bullying.
“It must stop this inhuman campaign against vulnerable children,” he said. “It should teach all children to be confident and to respect each other no matter who they are.”
Pang offered to provide guidance to “poorly educated” education officials through his organisation.
“It’s not too late. There are a few good books and studies out there they could read instead of relying on pseudo-experts and quacks.”

Absurd campaign
Fadiah Nadwa Fikri of Lawyers for Liberty said the Education Ministry’s campaign was absurd.
“I don’t see why they are doing this,” she said. “This group is already being persecuted and intimidated. And now they are trying to expose people and continue to attack them instead of trying to understand the whole problem. They are forgetting human rights.
“These people blur the lines between personal beliefs and a criminal act,” she said.
The Sin Chew report quoted the guide as saying: “Once the children have these symptoms, immediate attention should be given.”
The guide was published by Yayasan Guru Malaysia Bhd and the Putrajaya Consultative Council of Parents and Teachers Associations.
Yesterday’s seminar was reportedly the 10th such event. Earlier seminars were held in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Perak.
The guide was distributed to all who attended the seminar.
Bernama quoted Mohd Puad as saying parents and teachers should know these symptoms so that they could address social problems amongst teenagers, especially those still in school.
“It is now time that this LGBT issue is discussed openly and not treated as taboo,” he was quoted as saying.

Opinion:

Based on my opinion, it is stupid of the ministry of education in Malaysia to say of such broad accusation on people who are homosexual, metro-sexual or bisexual. As an example to support my point, a person can be "defined" as a "gay" when he wears a v-neck or sleeveless clothing, a preference of bright colored clothes, inclination-ally attracted to man and carry big handbags. so do they mean a regular person wearing v-neck clothing are considered gay? people who play rugby, football or any sport that has contact with other men are considered gay? and Businessmen who prefer bigger "handbags" are more convineant and could utilize its maximum use of the bag? this narrow mindset of the ministry should be removed and avoided as such controversional topic can be sensitive towards not only to homosexuality, but also, people who are straight.

Journalism??

There is this subject, "Introduction To Journalism" that I take in college. Though Journalism isn't the field that I'm interested in, but there is nothing wrong learning new things on life. Am I right? As the usual saying, "with knowledge, comes power.".

I always look forwards to the Journalism class in college. This is because, everything we do, have effect on other field or courses I study in the program, which is mass communications. What is it that I'm looking forward to in class throughout the whole semester? Well, basically to learn and have fun learning in the class taught by the most patient lecturer Mr. K (name unrevealed due to privacy policy).

Who? Why?

         Jeremy was the name given, 18 was the number of years he lived and still living. Music is the fire and flame that keeps him going like the combustion of fuel in a car's engine. Personal matters are not to be shared too often to the public, privacy is what the internet needs.
